Gyeonggi Provincial Museum was opened in 1996 to be the cradle of culture for Gyeonggi residents by finding, collecting, investigating and displaying cultural heritages scattered throughout Gyeonggi province and inherit the traditional culture of Gyeonggi province. The Museum has about 24,000 historic collections. The portraits of ancient sages and noted sages in Gyeonggi province demonstrate the development of the Confucian scholar culture since the 16th century, ancient documents verify that Gyeonggi province was the main stage of Confucian scholar culture, a quantity of Buddhist scriptures offer the means to guess at the development of printing culture in Gyeonggi province and scriptures represent the culture of Gyeonggi. In particular, the costume artifacts excavated from ancient tombs indicating the costume of the scholar- gentry and fabric research in the Joseon period are the representative artifacts in the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum.

Gyeonggi Provincial Museum presents permanent exhibitions to display the representative collections, several special exhibitions to determine the identity of Gyeonggi culture and special exchange exhibitions with museums abroad, publish academic research reports on the history and culture of Gyeonggi-do, and preserves and manages cultural heritages. Gyeonggi Provincial Museum provides a variety of cultural education programs including a museum academy for presenting the culture and art service to Gyeonggi residents, an internship for teenagers, a kids’ excavation experience classroom and a cultural heritage drawing contest.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Museum has the shape of a modernized Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, the architecture symbolizing Gyeonggi province, and shows the co-existence of tradition and modernity, and shared value and spheres. As the largest regional museum in Korea, Gyeonggi Provincial Museum is geographically located in the hub center forming a cultural belt with the Korean Folk Village, Everland and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, making it a comprehensive cultural space for seeing, learning and enjoying. Gyeonggi Provincial Museum plays its role by demonstrating the superiority of Gyeonggi culture and Korea in the world and presents a blueprint of future color by identifying the historic identity of Gyeonggi province.
